What is Wastage in Gold Jewellery?

Wastage in gold refers to the gold lost during the jewellery-making process. When artisans cut, shape, file, and polish gold, small amounts are lost as dust, filings, and scrap. Jewellers charge wastage (typically 6-12% of gold weight) to compensate for this loss.

💡 Typical Wastage Rates by Jewellery Type

  • Simple rings/bangles: 6-8% wastage
  • Chains/bracelets: 8-10% wastage
  • Intricate designs (necklaces, temple jewellery): 10-15% wastage
  • Kundan/Polki work: 12-20% wastage

📌 Wastage vs Making Charges

Wastage = Gold lost during making (charged as % of gold weight)
Making charges = Labour cost for craftsmanship (charged per gram or as % of gold value)
Both are added to the gold value, plus 3% GST, to calculate your final jewellery price.
